Tea tree oil is an amazing and powerful natural substance that has been around for hundreds of years and is still little known to many people outside Australia. But if you ask young people almost anywhere in the world, they know it for its power over acne. Others know it because it is in their toothpaste. It is also used to drive away pests and nasty odors. Tea tree oil is used in dozens if not hundreds of products.
The modern use of the term “oil” is a bit of a misnomer, as is “tea tree.” The
origin of both is no doubt Captain James Cook, the famous British explorer who was the first European to encounter aboriginal Australians in 1770. The plant the aborigines used to treat a variety of ailments did look like a tea plant from India, and the extract was a light, oily liquid.
A Google search on “tea tree oil” turns up millions of results but the best place to learn a bit more about the tea tree is at the Australian Tea Tree Industry Association website.
